Gaining mass (muscle) is very much to do with a solid muscle gaining training program but a successful mass gaining diet should form the basis of your muscle building plans. You cant gain any muscle without the right diet. Resistance exercises begin muscle growth but its your nutrition that ends it and builds your body.


Below is how I would structure a mass gaining diet:


Calories - Between 250-500 above your maintenance level

Protein - 1gram per pound of body weight per day

Fats - 25% of your daily intake

Carbs - The remainder of the calories to make up your total of maintenance + 250-500 per day.


I structured my mass gaining diet in exactly this way and it ended up with me gaining 17 pounds in 2013. Very effective way to gain mass (muscle) as on it I gained very little fat as well.


Fat gain while on a mass gaining program is inevitable. Don't worry about gaining fat on a muscle building plan as long as you are gaining more muscle than fat, that is the main thing.


When deciding what foods to eat while gaining mass I would suggest sticking within your macronutrient boundaries to be of highest importance and within that making sure the food you consume is as fresh as possible. Organic where your able, and your fat intake in particular to be very clean. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated as often as possible.


The benefits of a mass gaining diet is that you're completely optimizing your training program. There's nothing worse than putting in the hard work in the gym and not seeing the muscle building results your after outside of the gym.


So work hard and plan, schedule what your eating and track how its going, constantly. Diet is the main reason guys and girls don't build the muscle they're after. So sort out your diet correctly and your muscle gains will come.
