3 Situps That Do More Than Just Target Your Abs

If your exercise arsenal only includes the situp you did in sixth grade gym class, it’s time for an upgrade.


The 3 variations shown in the video above by Men’s Health Fitness Director BJ Gaddour not only hit your six-pack muscles, but come with a myriad of other benefits, too.


For instance, the butterfly situp mobilizes your groin and opens up your hip rotators, which are typically tight on most guys. When those areas are loose, it’s easy to squat, deadlift, lunge, and run.


There’s one important thing to keep in mind while you do these situps: “Your lower back shouldn’t round. The only movement should come from your hips and upper back,” says Gaddour.


This keeps your lower spine in a stable and straight position the entire time. The second you feel your lower back round, stop the rep and reset.
